The Physical Relation between Age and Metallicity in Galaxies

چکیده

We present unified chemical and spectrophotometric evolutionary synthesis models that allow to describe composite stellar populations in a chemically consistent way. Keeping track of the ISM abundance at birth of each star and using sets of input physics (stellar yields, tracks, spectra) for different metallicities we account for the increasing initial metallicity of successive stellar generations. For any galaxy type its Star Formation History determines the physical relation between the ages and metallicities of its stars. As compared to models using solar metallicity input physics only, differences are significant, both for the ISM enrichment evolution and for the spectrophotometric evolution, and they increase with lookback time. Results are used to interprete Damped Lyα Absorbers. Knowledge of the chemical evolution of the ISM allows to predict abundances of stars, star clusters, and tidal dwarf galaxies that may form when spirals merge at any redshift.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The 6dF Galaxy Survey: a low-redshift benchmark for bulge-dominated galaxies

The 6dF Galaxy Survey provides a very large sample of galaxies with reliable measurements of Lick line indices and velocity dispersions. This sample can be used to explore the correlations between mass and stellar population parameters such as age, metallicity and [α/Fe]. Preliminary results from such an analysis are presented here, and show that age and metallicity are significantly anti-corre...

The peculiar motions of early-type galaxies in two distant regions – V. The Mg–σ relation, age and metallicity

We have examined the Mg–σ relation for early-type galaxies in the EFAR sample and its dependence on cluster properties. A comprehensive maximum likelihood treatment of the sample selection and measurement errors gives fits to the global Mg–σ relation of Mgb = 0.131 logσ− 0.131 and Mg2 = 0.257 logσ− 0.305. The slope of these relations is 25% steeper than that obtained by most other authors due t...

Stellar population gradients in early - type cluster galaxies ⋆

We present a study of internal stellar population gradients in early-type cluster galaxies. Using the VLT VIMOS integral field unit, we observed 19 galaxies in the core of the Shapley Supercluster (z = 0.048). The radial trends in nine absorption lines (HδF to Fe5406) were measured to the effective radius for 14 galaxies, from which we derived the gradients in age, total metallicity and α-eleme...

The Gemini Deep Deep Survey. Vii. the Redshift Evolution of the Mass-metallicity Relation

We have investigated the mass-metallicity (M-Z) relation using galaxies at 0.4 < z < 1.0 from the Gemini Deep Deep Survey (GDDS) and Canada-France Redshift Survey (CFRS). Deep K and z band photometry allowed us to measure stellar masses for 69 galaxies. From a subsample of 56 galaxies, for which metallicity of the interstellar medium is also measured, we identified a strong correlation between ...

Low-mass X-ray Binaries and Globular Clusters in Early-type Galaxies. Ii. Globular Cluster Candidates and Their Mass-metallicity Relation

We present an astrometry and photometry catalogue of globular cluster (GC) candidates detected with HST WFPC2 in a sample of 19 early-type galaxies, appropriate for comparison to the lowmass X-ray binary (LMXB) populations observed with Chandra. In a companion paper, we present the Chandra data and investigate the relation between these populations. We demonstrate that, although there is little...
